Question
Answer
String Theory
A developing theory in particle physics that attempts to reconcile qunatum mechanics and general relativity. The theory has yet to make quantitative experimental predictions, which a theory must do in order to be confirmed or falsified.
particle physics
the branch of physics that studies subatomic particles and their interactions
quantum mechanics
the branch of quantum physics that accounts for matter at the atomic level
general relativity
a description of spacetime formulated by Einstein explaining how gravity affects the geometry of space and the flow of time
Theory of everything
(The Elegant Universe) The superstring theory tries to unite all of the branches of physics into one theory of everything. The technologies to detect this theory have yet to be created; therefore it is not yet falsifiable. Even with a theory of everything applying it in order to make a prediction on a larger scale would be incredibly tedious.
fundamental forces
four basic forces acting in nature: strong force, electromagnetic force, weak force, gravitational force
electrons
negatively charged particles
quarks
particles of matter that make up protons and neutrons
atom
(physics and chemistry) the smallest component of an element having the chemical properties of the element
bosons
particles with integral spin. All particles are either bosons or fermions. The spin of a composite particle is determined by the total spin (i.e., the component of its intrinsic angular momentum along one axis) of its particles. For instance, an alpha particle (two protons and two neutrons) has four half-integral spin values. No matter how they are added up, the result will be an integral spin value (try it!), so an alpha particle is a (composite) boson. The Pauli Exclusion Principle does not ap
superstring theory
A theory that describes resonant strings as the most elementary units in nature.
fermions
spacetime
the concept from special relativity that space and time are both essential in describing the position, motion, and action of any object or event
M-theory
The theory under which all five previous versions of string theory fall. The most recent synthesis of string theory ideas, M-theory predicts eleven spacetime dimensions and describes "membranes" as a fundamental element in nature.
holographic principle
Hawking‘s proposed theory that information that enters a black hole is not destroyed, but is stored on the event horizon. Problem--3D info on a 2D plane
quantum field theory
the branch of quantum physics that is concerned with the theory of fields
quantum gravity
doesn‘t exist
black hole thermodynamics
The area of study that seeks to reconcile the laws of thermodynamics with the existence of black hole event horizons.
